After 30 years with DuPont I finally decided to take my retirement. Rachel and I put our house in Dallas up for sale 3 months ago. Unfortunately for us the market had gone into a tailspin earlier in the year and the Realtor was frank when he told us that it would probably be some time to get anything near our asking price. We were pretty well positioned financially so we told him we could wait. After numerous vacations in Mexico, we had decided long ago that we would sell the house and relocate to Lake Chapala just outside Guadalajara. The largest ex-pat American community was there and the weather was perpetual spring. We had looked at Puerto Vallarta and San Miguel de Allende as possible ...

House sitting is the practice where a homeowner that is leaving his house for any period of time entrusts it to a house sitter. There is a mutual agreement were the house sitter is entitled to live rent-free in exchange for assuming responsibilities such as taking care of the homeowners pets, performing general maintenance (pools, gardens, air conditioning, etc.), keeping trespassers off the property, forwarding mail, and in general making sure that everything runs smoothly just as if the owner [...]

No Wrong Turns: Live Rent Free in Mexico

Baja California draws thousands of vacationers each year who fork out wads of cash to stay in cookie-cutter hotels. I prefer to stay in more low-key places for two reasons: number one, I usually don't have the cash to live the lux life and number two, I'd rather experience more of the culture than see another typical hotel lobby. But, if the opportunity came up to stay in a nicer place and experience the culture all for a decent price I'd be up for it . And it might just be possible, in fact, it just might be free... which happens to be right in my price range.
How'd you like to visit Mexico and stay for free in your own place? Seriously....for free. [...]

Housesitting: Living Rent Free in Puerto Vallarta

I have been a visitor from Vancouver for many years. I would rent an apartment for a few weeks every year near Los Muertos beach while taking a well-deserved break from teaching. Last November while hanging out on the playa with Jeff and Cindy from Ohio, I was offered the opportunity of a lifetime. [...]

I am often asked by people “where should I live in Mexico…what’s the best place?” And, of course, the answer must be ”How the hell do I know where you would like best.” Do you like the beach (oddly, some people don’t), or desert, jungle or mountains? Are you a big city person or a village dweller? […]

It finally happened to me. There had been rumors of layoffs around the company for almost a year. I had 6 years seniority as a computer specialist in a department of over 30 people and thought I was safe. The company had been very successful servicing the booming real estate industry. Now, even on my street of upper middle income homes there were vacant houses, victims of the "mortgage crisis".
I was a renter and fortunately my lease was about to expire. The company gave me a generous severance and vowed to call me back when the housing market ...

NUEVO VALLARTA, Jal. - Rob and Mary Ladner pictured their dream retirement as a sailing trip around the world. But everything changed when they cruised into the big, balmy bay of Puerto Vallarta 10 years ago.
Seduced by swaying palm trees, colorful markets and cheap beachfront housing, the Ladners dropped anchor. The couple bought a corner condominium in a master-planned community 1,500 miles from their native California, but with nearly all the amenities of home.
